Theron's New Bike Adventure

Hey Guys!

Its been awhile since the bike tour to L.A. and it change our lives for the best. Danny decided to head back to South Korea and teach English for another two years and I have been racing my bike, enjoying life, and pedicabbing. Ever since we got home and shared stories with others I have been thinking of another adventure. I was telling the same stories to so many different people it made me crave for something new.

And now it begins. I've never been to the Northeast and I've never been to one of the biggest cities in the world, so why not!! New York City, thats right!

On April 17, 2013 I will depart Austin, Texas and travel to the Big Apple, New York City on my bicycle. This will be a solo journey and a little longer one. I project it will take around 27 days of riding alone and around 2,400 miles with many more mountains and harsher weather.

Massive Media Update: Days 20-23

Dec 11 - Day 19 – Yarnell, AZ to Parker, AZ 120 miles
  • We woke up and didn't know where we were. With RV campers at all sides, we got the heck out of there. We ate breakfast at a nearby restaurant then to the post office to send some cards. People Informed us about our descent on the way out of town that would be a view of the desert floor and some distant mountains. We saw just that and took many pics. The rest of the ride was flat and deserted. Basically it was a long haul all the way to Parker. We got there, had a large bottle of chocolate milk and went to sleep at Motel 6.

Dec 12 - Day 20 – Parker, AZ to somewhere outside Twentynine Palms, CA. 80 miles
  • Today was exciting because as soon as we left our room at the motel 6 we crossed into California!!! The day was a long stretch. There was lot of straight, slightly inclining road and vast desert. At an intersection was a sign that read "Twentynine Palms 93 miles." There was nothing in between so we packed up with water and food and set up for the night about 20 miles outside Twentynine Palms.

Dec 13 - Day 21 –
  • We had camped next to some smaller mountains in the dessert outside Twentynine Palms, CA. We packed up and rode the 30 miles to town to have some breakfast. Theron had the usual pancake stack and eggs, and I had a huge Denver omelet and some seriously loaded hashbrowns. We rode on starting to climb a little into Yucca Valley. The days were so short that it was nightfall by the time we left Yucca. It was starting to get cold and we were on the verge of spending too much time with each other. We got to our turn after climbing some short steep hills and realized the road we had to take to Big Bear was a ghetto dirt road. "Oh Hell no!" we tried to find another road but they were all the same... We got frustrated and decided to eat dinner at a bar. We saw a truck outside with mountain bikes and quickly found their owners. We sat at the next table and talked to them about our trip and the area. They said the road we tried was treacherous and could barely be crossed by a dirt bike. Furthermore, our back-up route was deemed extremely dangerous by all. Eventually, the guys offered us a ride to our destination on the other side. 2 options, take the street or the dirt. Them being pro mountain bikers, we took the dirt in their 4-wheel drive Chevy. It was a long bumpy ride through a bunch of Joshua Trees. They took us to an old mine and we went inside. It was like a cave in there. Then we stopped at a quartz rock overlook and viewed Big Bear. Derek, "the Hermonator" who was driving, took us to Larry's place to spend the night. We talked to Larry for a while and found out he is an announcer for major cycling events around the nation as well as a pro mountainbiker whose been racing for over 25 years. He made us feel like we were at home and was most accommodating. We slept on the third balcony floor and Slept excellently.

Dec 14 - Day 22 –
  • After last night, I would say there wasn’t much that could be more weird and fun at the same time. Well fun is certainly not measurable at this point anymore as there has been too much thus far.
  • We headed out of Larry’s place and for the shop to repair Theron’s bar tape, which was destroyed by something rubbing it the previous night. We found it atop a hill across from Larry’s ski slope after eating an incredible breakfast along the way. We said bye to the Hermonator and went back to Larry’s to put my trailer back on. Derek gave me a call and said he would ride with us a little of the way for fun. He was out and ready when we came back by. We gave him a bottle of Korean Ginseng drink with the ginseng plant inside. He ate that and brought out some smaller, more potent bottles for us. Now we were energized to take to the road. We descended a little and went up a lot. Then Derek pulled off and we said our goodbyes one last time. He told us what was to come casually. We were ready. We were on the descent for 6 or 7000 ft after that. We were having so much fun, we stopped halfway to take a break and eat some good food at “the Bus Stop,” a small independent shop. MMMmmm pumpkin muffins… We searched for cars there and found a couple. Then down the other 4000 ft we went. We made it through all the winds and turns to San Bernardino. We pushed for Claremont and eventually made it. We met Adam and his roommates and left for a while to get pizza. Shower and bed was the treat of the night. Thank you Adam!

Dec 15 - Day 23 –
  • We woke up in the morning to some oatmeal with granola and brown sugar provided by our wonderful host Adam Long. He then showed us a fresh chicken egg and swiftly led us down to the beach shortly thereafter. The beach was 45 miles away, so it was no short haul, although it was mostly on straight bike path (that was paved) running alongside a large water drainage ditch. Along the way, we saw so many trees growing ripe fruits in peoples’ yards. Long story short, we went shopping at the LA open market. We picked fresh lemons, oranges, kumquats, and avocados. To the right and left down the bike path, everyone and their mother had a horse it seemed, with numerous stables and people riding them. We stepped off the bikes at Seal Beach and raced to the water barefoot. The cool feeling was accomplishment at its highest level.
  • We took off from there and split with Adam who had to go back to study for finals after his near-100-mile day. We had Cheese steak sandwiches and headed off for the car we had found yesterday. We got there and it was a beauty for the money. We are currently working on how to purchase it and make it road worthy before days end tomorrow. Danny’s friend Kelly was kind enough to completely load her brand new Kia with all of our bike stuff and take us to her place for the night. Before doing so, Danny insisted we eat at a Korean restaurant. The food was astronomical and Danny quickly made friends with the lady working there upon telling his story. We ended the day with a shower and off to bed inside a home for the third day in a row!

(We stayed with Theron's friend, Adam. Adam with an egg from his chickens!)

(Adam's chicken wanders about. A Coyote warning sign.)

(We found orange trees EVERYWHERE! Pretty much the best tasting orange in my life. A lemon tree, too!)

(When life hands you lemons...)

(Theron and Adam. Danny and Adam.)

(First glimpse of the beach! We made it!)

(Theron and Danny celebrating with a little jump at Seal Beach.)

(Time for a Philly Cheese-steak! Long Beach, California - the only place you can find a Porsche dealer next to a KFC.)

(Danny's new ride! This is the car that will get us back. [I didn't know I'd be riding with the evil guy from Tron]. Cruising out of the LBC.)
